Teamsters Take Action
Multiemployer pension funds in our country are facing a crisis and there is no time to lose in finding a solution. Without rapid congressional action 1.5 million retirees and hundreds of thousands of active workers in some 300 failing multiemployer plans – including the Teamsters’ Central States Plan– will be at risk of losing the pensions they earned through a lifetime of hard work. As Members of Congress take the next few months before the midterm election to spend more time in state with their constituents, it is the perfect time to try to engage them on the multiemployer pension crisis in our country and urge them to quickly adopt a solution that will keep pension benefits whole.
As you are probably aware, Congress this year created a Joint Select Committee and tasked it with crafting legislation that will solve the crisis. We need the constituents of the Joint Select Committee’s membership to reach out to encourage their congressperson(s) to join together and report out a bipartisan solution to America’s multiemployer pension crisis that does not include cuts to benefits.
Individuals who do not have a member of Congress appointed to the Committee can help too by reaching out to their Senators and Representative to urge them to either cosponsor the Butch Lewis Act or encourage their colleagues to add their support to the legislation — The more bipartisan support the legislation garners, the more likely it is to be adopted by the Committee. Canteen Vending Workers Vote Union
Congratulations to Teamsters Local 810 in Long Island City, NY for an organizing victory at the Canteen Vending.
“We had over 90% of cards signed and the company still refused to recognize the union” said Mike Smith, President of 810.
Local 810 immediately filed for an election and yesterday these hard working employees voted overwhelmingly to join the Teamsters.
Victory at Architectural Windows
Our brothers and sisters at Architectural Windows in East Rutherford, NJ overwhelmingly ratified a historic contract. They will be receiving the highest wage increases ever negotiated at the shop. In addition to wages they will now all receive a Personal Day as well as money from the company to purchase safety shoes each year of the contract. Their health care was preserved and there were no give-backs.
Architectural Windows was organized almost 20 years ago with approximately sixty employees. Today the shop employs over two hundred Local 810 workers and management credits their hard work and their Union as the keys to their success and growth. They are proudly represented by Vice-President Nelson Silva and President Mike Smith. “The Shop Stewards and committee members did a tremendous job during our negotiations and deserve most of the credit” said Brother Smith.
Great job, guys!!
Ivan ‘Rocky’ Diaz
Our Union has lost a great man and Labor leader. Ivan ‘Rocky’ Diaz passed away last week and has left his family, friends and Union heartbroken. Rocky was a hard working member, Shop Steward and Trustee of Local 810. He left this world way too early and he will be missed dearly. His service to the membership and this Union will never be forgotten. RIP, brother.
Richardson World Child Care Foundation, Inc.
Karl Richardson is not only a hard working member and Shop Steward at Fordham University, he’s also runs RICHARDSON WORLD CHILD CARE FOUNDATION, INC. It is a non-profit organization that has dedicated itself to helping disabled people in our communities and in less fortunate countries for more than 20 years. Their aim is to assist families in providing for households and adapting to their society by means of courses, workshops, work and other charitable acts.
This past September Karl traveled to the Dominican Republic with backpacks, lunch boxes and school supplies donated by Local 810 for underprivileged children to help prepare them for the school year. Pictured above is Karl with some of these grateful students, teachers and their families. Our Union was proud to assist him in providing these kids with school supplies and assisting them with their education. Great job, brother!
